Each student will select and provide a "GREAT" answer for one of the following questions - be sure to include the page number in your textbook which assisted you with your response.
1. List 3 values conflicts discussed in the text and give an example of each.
2. Explain the difference between exposing your values versus imposing them.
3. Tell why understanding your family of origin can be beneficial in your work with clients.
4. Explain why selfawareness is important for anyone embarking in a career in the human services. What impact does early development have on the individual helper? How does self acceptance and the role of thoughts, feelings, and actions relate to this concept of self awareness? Why should someone understand their motivations for pursing a position as a helper? Provide a personal example.

ReplyDeleteOne value conflict is Abortion;an example of this value conflict is you are working at a school base clinic and you have a student come in wanting to end her pregnancy with out talking with her parents or even thinking about it. But you're against abortions.
Another value conflict is Sexual Orientation; an example of this would be you are against same sex marriages and you work at a adoption agency where two men come in wanting to adopt a little boy.
The last value conflict is Religion; you are a Christian and you have a client who comes in that is Muslim and they say to you that the don't believe in Jesus Christ and you have a Bible in your office.
The difference between exposing your values versus imposing them.
ReplyDeleteExposing one's values is a way that the social worker shows that he or she is human. However what may be a value for one person may not be a value to another person. Revealing your values is stating what you believe and how you would handles situations. I would not use this particular method unless the client asks, but that is my personal opinion.Self- determination is an important value in social work. Allowing the client self-determination allows the client to make his or her own decision after the social worker provides the client with all the solutions to an issue situation and also providing the pros and cons that come with each alternative or solution and the client deciding what he or she will do.
Imposing values is telling the cient what he or she should do to handle situations in their life. When imposing values you take away the clients right to make their own decision and the social worker guides the client in the way that he or she thinks the client should go under the influence of the social workers beliefs. An example given in the text was a social worker telling an individal in an abusive relationship to leaver her spouse. (pages 21-22)
