SOWK 364 - Weekly Quizzes

SOWK 364 - Weekly Quizzes - Questions For Discussion

Each week students will answer one question as listed on the Questions For Discussion .
The Questions for Discussion will be peer reviewed. Each student will answer one question from the list below for each chapter. No two students should answer the same question. Be sure to include the page number in the textbook which assisted youwith your answer (this is very important in order for the student to earn credit for their response). The questions and the answers will be used as a study guide for quizzes and exams. Students will earn a unit grade based on their postings and the quality of their postings bytheir peers.

SPECIAL NOTE ON GRADING FOR THIS UNIT - You may not wait until the day before the deadline and complete multiple questions or post multiple comments. Five (5) points will be deducted from the students final grade for each and every late comment or posting. The instructor will check on a weekly basis and place reduction points in Blackboard. At the end of the semester a paper magazine will be created to provide an outlet for students in the field of social work to share their unique experiences and perspective.

Each student is required to post two blog posts weekly, a substantial comment on two fellow students posts each week. Resist the temptation to be quick and sloppy–as when some write using all lower case or when writers never bother to correct typos. Avoid “colloquial” language like, “Yo dudes, how yall doen?” Substantive means to share a serious, thoughtful, reflective comment or question, or it is a means to educate us about something you have read. Note also that no entries may be made the last two weeks of the semester. Your instructor reads every entry but does not comment on all.

SPECIAL NOTE ON GRADING - You may not wait until the day before or the day of the deadline and complete multiple questions or post multiple comments – 5 points will be deducted from the students final grade for each and every late comment or posting. The instructor will check on a weekly basis and place reduction points in Blackboard.

Blog Postings: Students are responsible for submitting short commentaries on weeks’ readings (100-150 words). Commentaries should focus on all of the readings for each week and should consist of limited summary; focusing on an evaluation of the readings and identifying 2-3 questions for discussion during the class meeting (focus on the articles’ key issues, strengths and limitations).
Each commentary should be submitted as a post to the student’s personal class blog by 5:00pm on the Sunday before the class meeting. To be clear, students should post commentaries to their blog before the topic is discussed in class.
Blog Comments: Each student is responsible for contributing comments to fellow students’ blogs. Comments should be a minimum of 150 words and offer a critique of that week’s posting, seek clarification, compare or contrast postings, or provide additional evidence or new information (such as a link to a related article, website, etc.). Each student must contribute a minimum of 20 comments, credit will be given for a maximum of two comments each week, students cannot comment on the same blog more than three times over the duration of the course. Comments must be posted by 6:00am on the day of class for posts related to that week’s readings.

Also, in an effort to cover more material without overburdening each student assignments/discussion questions will be broken up within the class so that you will usually have to research only one or two questions per week and then share your findings with the class online in the course blog for follow-up questions and comments. Your contributions to the blog must be substantive and clearly demonstrate that you read the course materials or conducted additional research. Simply agreeing with another student or restating what someone else has already discussed will not earn you full points. For this reason, posting your discussion question answers early is in your best interest. The Pass/Fail grade will be earned by the quality of both your initial posting and follow-up discussion. All students must respond and post according to the instructions or a grade of zero will be earned by all students in the class for that week's readings.

All questions come from the required textbook .
